The Deep Writing Process

Deep’s Young Author Project follows an 11-week creative writing curriculum, structured as follows:

WEEKS 1-4: DEVELOPING BASIC SKILLS
Writing Fellows act as guides, leading the group to explore over-arching concepts.
Deep authors are learning the basics of great writing: using revealing details, figurative language, and approaching original concepts. This is about the relationship between the Deep authors and writing.

  • Week 1: Getting to know you (autobiography)
  • Week 2: Using revealing details
  • Week 3: Using figurative language
  • Week 4: Quick-draw drafting

WEEKS 5-7: TRYING INTERMEDIATE TECHNIQUES
Writing Fellows act as one-on-one mentors, giving individualized feedback to each author.
The Deep authors are each working on honing their craft by using intermediate literary devices and techniques to make their individual writing projects really engage a reader. This is about the relationship between the Deep authors and their audience.

  • Week 5: Exploring form
  • Week 6: Developing mood
  • Week 7: Building tension

WEEKS 8-10: REVISING AND GETTING READY TO PUBLISH
Writing Fellows act as editors, encouraging Deep authors to make choices that will make their voices really shine.
The Deep authors are fine-tuning their work by going back and considering their choices. They’re making deliberate decisions about organization, pacing, and syntax. This is about the relationship between the Deep authors and their unique voices.

  • Week 8: Story-level revision
  • Week 9: Line-level revision
  • Week 10: Last minute revision and author bios (PUBLISHING SUBMISSION DUE THIS WEEK.)

WEEK 11: CELEBRATING PUBLICATION AND VOTING
Writing fellows act as cheerleaders, giving pointers on performance to make sure authors read their pieces in a compelling way (maybe even on stage at Deep Speaks!)
Deep authors are reading their best piece to the group, and everyone is voting on the deepest three pieces to represent their workshop onstage at Deep Speaks and be in the running for Deep Laureate. This is about the relationship between the Deep authors and their own hard-won progress.

  • Week 11: Sharing our voices
